The short version
WhoIsCalling keeps everything on your phone. There are no accounts, no servers, and no analytics — the app never sends your contacts, notes, or call information anywhere. The permissions below are used only on your device, so the app can show you a card about who’s calling.
Who this covers
This policy applies to the WhoIsCalling Android app (“the app”), published by Common Sense Apps (“we”, “us”). It explains what the app can access on your device and confirms that none of it is collected by us or shared with anyone.
Data we collect or transmit
None.
The app has no backend and makes no network requests to us. It contains no advertising, no analytics or tracking SDKs, and it does not create an account or profile. We cannot see your contacts, notes, calls, or how you use the app, because that information never leaves your device.
What the app stores on your device
Everything you add lives only in the app’s private storage on your phone:
- Contacts you save in the app — a title, phone number, your notes, and any photos you attach. These are kept separately from your phone’s address book; the app never writes to or changes your system contacts.
- These entries are used solely to show a caller-ID card for the numbers you’ve saved. Uninstalling the app deletes them.
How the app uses call information
To show the caller card at the right moment, the app checks the following on your device only:
- The phone’s call state (ringing or in a call), to know when a call starts.
- The incoming or dialed number, so it can be matched against the numbers you’ve saved.
- The recent call log, to show your saved labels on the Recent screen and to read the number of an outgoing call on phones that report it late.
This matching happens entirely on your phone. Numbers and call details are never uploaded, recorded remotely, or shared.
Permissions, and why the app asks
- Phone & call log
- Detect when a call starts and read the number, so it can be matched to your saved notes — on your device.
- Display over other apps
- Draw the caller-ID card on top of the call screen.
- Make calls
- Place a call when you tap a saved contact. Used only when you choose to call.
- Call-redirection role (optional)
- On some phones, supplies the dialed number for outgoing calls so the card can appear. It never changes, blocks, or reroutes your call.
- Notifications
- Show the small ongoing notice for the background service that watches for calls.
- Start at boot & ignore battery optimization (optional)
- Keep the caller-ID service running so cards still appear after a restart or when the system tries to sleep the app.
- Photos
- Attach images you pick to a saved contact. The app only receives the images you choose from the system picker.
- Contacts (picker only)
- If you import a number from your address book, the system picker returns just that one entry. The app does not request full contacts access and cannot read your address book on its own.
Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or share your information — there is nothing for us to share, because it stays on your device. Data only leaves the app when you personally act:
- Export backup creates a
.zip file on your device that you control and can move or delete.
- Tapping call or message hands the number to your phone’s own dialer or messaging app.
Storage, security & deletion
Your data is stored in the app’s private, sandboxed storage. To delete everything, uninstall the app, or open Settings ▸ Apps ▸ WhoIsCalling ▸ Storage ▸ Clear data. Any backups you exported are separate files under your control.
Children’s privacy
The app is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from anyone — it collects nothing at all.
Changes to this policy
If the app’s data practices ever change, we will update this page and its effective date. Material changes will appear here before they take effect.
